Have you ever spent time and money preparing for an upcoming audition…and then you didn’t end up going because you were too nervous?
I’ve been a vocal coach for over 15 years and I can’t even count how many times I have coached a client for a specific audition only to find out when I check in that they decided not to go because they were just too anxious or nervous.
My friends…please don’t let this be you!
If it has been you in the past (or maybe you still struggle with it now), this is your opportunity to start making a change.
It truly kills me to know that one of my clients has invested time and money with me and then didn’t use the work we did together.
So this week I want to share with you some of my top hacks for managing and mastering your audition anxiety.
Real quick, before I share these tips, let’s get a little business out of the way.

Ok, so back to the real reason you clicked that link. Here are my top hacks for managing and mastering your audition anxiety.
Reframe your anxiety
If you come here often, then you know I spend a LOOOOT of time talking about the things you are telling yourself. You have the power to make or break every situation (and audition) by being intentional about the words you use (even if you are just thinking them!) Anxiety and nerves are a natural part of the audition lifestyle so you’d better figure out how to make them work FOR you rather than AGAINST you, right?!
What words are you using when you think or talk about an upcoming audition?
Can you rephrase them in a more positive light?
Let’s take a couple of the things I’ve told myself and reframe them together. Then you can apply this concept to your own “anxiety vocabulary” (did I just coin that? I think I might have!)
“I am so nervous about getting back to auditioning after so much time away!”
“I am so excited to get back to my passion!”
or go from
“I am going CRAZY waiting to hear if I got a callback!”
“I can’t WAIT to find out if I got a callback!”
I know, this seems like a super cheesy exercise, but I’m telling you…it works!!
Maybe not the first few times you do it, because your naturally cynical nature will probably make you feel a bit ridiculous, but I promise you that if you stick with it, eventually it will become a habit. Once it becomes a habit, not only will you not feel ridiculous, you won’t even realize you are doing it anymore!
Pay attention to what your anxiety is trying to tell you
Ok. It’s time to put on your detective hat for a bit. 🕵🏼♀️
What is causing your anxiety/nerves?
✔ Got this one.
My anxiety comes from standing up in front of a room of people I don’t know, singing for them, and inviting them to judge my performance….done.
Don’t gloss over this step.
That’s the obvious answer…but what about that scenario makes you nervous?
Are you nervous because you have to sing in front of people you don’t know?
Would you be more comfortable if you DID know them?
Are you nervous every time you sing in front of people or only in auditions?
Are you nervous because they are judging you?
Until you understand the true reason(s) why auditions make you nervous, you can’t begin to address them and develop your personal strategy to help you manage and eventually master them!
(Doesn’t that sound so much more fun?!)
Use your anxiety to take action
Anxiety is just a form of energy that we happen to associate with negativity.
Now that you have learned how to flip the script on your anxiety vocabulary (pun totally intended 😜), you can allow that energy to become a positive force in your auditions.
Audition nerves aren’t something you should get rid of. You actually need them! I can’t even imagine walking into an audition room and breaking out into song completely by myself without that nervous energy!
So now that you have these hacks at your fingertips, it’s time to get to work my friend!
